We recently heard back from our Chinese contact, Weiran, who sent us photos of her home in Shanghai. We were surprised to see that the interior wouldn’t look out of place in any other city in the world.
I feel rather guilty since I was perhaps expecting a lot more red and gold – probably based on your typical Chinese restaurant – and clearly my perception of Chinese culture is very stereotypical. We’ve decided we might want to tone it down in terms of dragons and Chinese symbols as stereotyping could end up offending people.
It’s like if a Chinese designer made a device for a Scottish home and rendered it completely tartan! A bit more subtlety might be more effective.
